Things to do in and around Clunes

Dja Dja Wurrung Country

The historic gold-mining town of Clunes is located on the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. The cultural layers of this landscape begin with the Dja Dja Wurrung, who have lived in the region for more than a thousand generations. In the middle of the nineteenth century, British settlement brought European farming and agriculture to the region, along with mining.
Much of what's available for visitors to see and do relates to settlement and the years that follow. But we invite you to contemplate the landscape and its deeper layers--to see its waterways and beautiful rolling hills, low forested mountains, and fertile plains as the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung, who hunted, fished, farmed, harvested and lived here for millennia. Think of what was, of what has been lost, and how it was taken. As you enjoy the beauty of these surroundings and seize the many opportunities for pleasure--in dining, exploring, meeting, learning and discovering--we ask, in the spirit of reconciliation, that you think about these deeper layers.
